Transforming Dewsbury Bus Station
The West Yorkshire Combined Authority is launching a public consultation on a scheme to transform Dewsbury Bus Station, as part of the Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme.
Dewsbury Bus Station provides a main gateway into Dewsbury Town Centre from surrounding areas and provides an interchange for bus and rail travel with the nearby Dewsbury Rail Station, which serves the TransPennine route. It also facilitates a town centre circular bus service as well as longer distance connections through its coach operators. The average daily footfall was last recorded at around 18,500 in 2018/19, a figure that has been in decline over the last few years along with bus usage.
Various reviews since 2010 have identified that Dewsbury Town Centre suffers from a poor arrival and sense of place experience for visitors and potential investors. As a main gateway into the town, the Bus Station plays a role in providing this experience. However, the facility’s last major redevelopment was in 1994 and it is now in need of modernisation to improve all aspects of the passenger environment and address some concerns regarding safety and security.
The improvements are to the existing bus station building’s interior and exterior, as well as external operational bus apron and pedestrian access. Kirklees Council is leading on the delivery of a separate, complementary scheme to improve cycling and walking access from the adjacent Highways as part of a wider Dewsbury Town Centre scheme. This scheme’s public consultation will be later in the summer.
Transforming Dewsbury Bus Station public consultation is due to launch on 22 July. Anyone is able to take part online after this date by visiting https://www.yourvoice.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/dewsbury, or a copy of the consultation can be sent by post by telephoning 0113 245 7676 or writing to us at: Freepost CONSULTATION TEAM (WYCA). Please help us get the best possible response to the consultation by promoting it through your networks, communication channels, and communities.
Feedback from the public consultation will be used to inform and develop the plans.
Before construction works at the bus station can begin, a business case to support the proposals and securing of the required funding needs to take place, along with obtaining planning approvals. this will be ongoing throughout 2021 / 2022. Construction works are likely to be undertaken throughout 2023, with completion expected in early 2024.
Full details of the scheme including its aims/objectives, frequently asked questions along with concept plans and artist’s impressions of what the transformation could look like will be available at the public consultation link above.
