Mark Visits Mirfield Free Grammar School to take part in Democratic Engagement Activities
Mark Eastwood MP visited The Mirfield Free Grammar school (MFG) today (Friday 13th May 2022) for a morning of questions and debate.
Students were invited to take part in a ‘mock parliament’ session which allowed students to increase their understanding of the function of democracy and helped them to practice their debating skills.
Over 100 students over two sessions took part. The topic for debate? The shorter school day – Arguments for and against.
The students articulated their arguments brilliantly and were a credit to the Academy.
Following the ‘mock parliament’, Mark went live to the school via Teams for a ‘Question Time’ style session.
MFG students had the opportunity to grill Mark on a range of subjects – from Cyber Bullying to flooding on Battyeford playing fields, and everything in between!
Finally, the wonderful MFG catering team provided a glorious afternoon tea for Mark Eastwood, Sarah Ward (Senior Caseworker to Mark Eastwood MP), Sarah Berry (Principal) and members of the Student Council.

I had such an interesting and enjoyable time visiting Mirfield Free Grammar School on Friday! It was great to see so many active minds, as I played the speaker in our mock school parliament debate!
Many thanks to the pupils and teachers at the school for arranging such an informative morning.
